Safety and Crime in Cuba

Those who respect the rules of good behavior will have no problems with the police in Cuba. Otherwise, those who might consume too much rum and will behave in a visibly unpleasant way, may „earn” themselves a night in jail.

Basically a safe country

Cuba is an extremely safe country to travel to. Crime is limited mainly to minor swindling and larceny. Just like anywhere in the world, here, too, it is wise not to display your Western wealth unnecessarily and not to carry too large amounts of money. If you have the possibility, make use of the safe in your place of accommodation to keep your valuables stowed away.

For certain documents, such as your passport, it is recommended that you make at least one copy and keep it in a different place. For example, leave a copy of your passport and driving license back in your hotel room, since you must have the original documents on you whenever you are out in the city or anywhere in Cuba.

The obligation of identification in Cuba

Please note that in Cuba you have an obligation to identify yourself at any time. This means that you should carry your passport with you at all times. This is the reason why we recommend having a copy of your important documents stowed away in a safe place. In the possibility that your originals might be stolen or lost, it would be of great help to have a copy when you go to your country’s embassy to have emergency documents reissued.
